About the procedure
The Mona Lisa Dx Biobot is the only robotic system in the world used for fusion biopsy that revolutionizes prostate biopsy by enabling a more precise, minimally invasive and more effective approach to prostate cancer detection. This cutting-edge technology improves the accuracy of diagnosis, lowers the risks for both physicians and patients, and enables a safer and more precise diagnosis of prostate cancer.
The right candidates
The physician will recommend prostate biopsy in case of an elevated level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in blood, abnormal results of a digital rectal examination that discovered nodes or hard areas in the prostate, positive family medical history of prostate cancer or other risk factors, and symptoms such as difficulty urinating or the presence of blood in urine or seminal fluid, which can indicate the need for further examination and potential diagnostic procedure.
Preparing for the procedure
The patient will undergo a general examination before a fusion prostate biopsy is recommended. This enables the physician to assess the patient’s overall health and their medical history. The decision to perform a fusion prostate biopsy will depend on the patient’s symptoms and treatment goals.
Details about the procedure
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. A thin, hollow needle is introduced through the perineum (transperineally) into the prostate under tactile, ultrasound or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) guidance techniques. During biopsy, puncture is usually performed to collect several cylinders of tissue from both lobes of the prostate, a total of approximately 6 to 20 samples, to detect cancer.
Recovery post procedure
After a fusion prostate biopsy, the patient is discharged the same day after several hours of monitoring to ensure the stability of the patient’s condition. Our physicians will provide detailed instructions regarding care, which includes avoiding strenuous activities and monitoring for signs of infection or complications.
Postoperative recovery can last several days, and patients may experience pain in the surgical area, blood in urine and symptoms of infection
Possible precautions
Fusion prostate biopsy is a precise, safe and common diagnostic test with minimal risk of infection, bleeding or difficulty urinating.
