Associate Professor Vatroslav Šerić, MSc, PhD

Medical Biochemistry Specialist

Associate Professor Vatroslav Šerić, MSc, PhD, was born in 1960 in Garevac. His journey into medical laboratory diagnostics began with an undergraduate degree in medical biochemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, University of Zagreb. He furthered his graduate studies at University of Zagreb Medical School, where he pursued clinical laboratory diagnostics and specialized in medical biochemistry. With extensive experience at the forefront of medical laboratory diagnostics within various hospitals, he brings invaluable expertise to our team.

Biography:

Prof. Šerić’s educational journey began in 1979 when he enrolled at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry at the University of Zagreb, specializing in medical biochemistry. After completing his undergraduate studies, he continued his education at the School of Medicine at the University of Zagreb, where he pursued postgraduate studies in clinical laboratory diagnostics and later specialized in medical biochemistry. His scientific path culminated with the defense of his doctoral dissertation titled “Biomarkers of Kidney Damage in the Development of Calcium Oxalate Urolithiasis” at the School of Medicine at the University of Osijek.

Prof. Šerić began his professional career as the head of the clinical laboratory at the Special Hospital “Jakeš” in Modriča in 1985. In 1989, he moved to the General Hospital Osijek, where he worked as a resident medical biochemist in the Department of Medical Biochemistry. After completing his specialization, he became a specialist in medical biochemistry, marking the beginning of a significant phase in his career. In 2001, he took on the role of head of the Department of Emergency Laboratory Diagnostics in the Division of Medical Biochemistry at the Clinical Hospital Osijek. He held this position until 2010, when he became the head of the Department of Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics. Since 2015, prof. Šerić has served as the head of the Institute of Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics at the University Hospital Center Osijek.

In addition to his clinical work, Vatroslav Šerić has extensive teaching experience. Since 1998, he has been working as an assistant at the Department of Medical Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Clinical Chemistry at the School of Medicine at the University of Osijek. He advanced to the position of senior assistant and has been a docent at the same faculty since 2013. Throughout his teaching career, prof. Šerić has taught numerous generations of students and contributed to their scientific development.

Achievements:

On the scientific front, prof. Šerić has participated in numerous research projects. He dedicated six years to research on the project “Interaction of Nitroso Compounds with Biomedically Important Molecules.” He also worked on the project “Determination of Risk Factors and Prevention of Urinary Stones” and on the project “Physico-Chemical and Metabolic Risk Factors of Stone Formation.” Since 2015, he has been involved in a bilateral Croatian-German project titled “Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in the Croatian Population as a Result of Chronic Exposure to Arsenic.”

His bibliography includes co-authorship in the book “Manual for Seminars and Exercises in Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry 2,” 65 original scientific papers, and numerous presentations at international and national conferences. He regularly participates in global IFCC congresses and Euromedlab – the European Congress of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine.

As a mentor, prof. Šerić has guided two doctoral dissertations, co-mentored one, and supervised several graduate theses of MLD students. His dedication to education and research is evident through his work with young scientists. He has been a member of the Croatian Society of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine since 1985 and the Croatian Chamber of Medical Biochemists since 1994.
